Judaism 101—the Fall Holidays—September 25

Judaism 101 is a series of one-hour classes aimed at all of us who wish we knew more about our faith. We will start the year with the Rabbi discussing the fall holidays, big and small. He will also cover some of the basics. Bring your questions. They will be answered.

The first session is on Sunday, September 25, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. There will be coffee and a nosh.

The next class will be on December 11.

Our Temple Administrator, Joyce Sturm, is retiring after 15 years. To celebrate all of her dedication and hard work over the years, the Temple will be holding a luncheon in her honor on June 12. Please see the flyer for more information.

Joyce says she will be spending more time with her family, doing a bit of traveling, and working on her photography. Read her entire farewell letter, I’ll Be Retiring.

As part of the Temple’s mission to end hunger, we are collecting canned goods throughout the months of March and April.

Bring your donations to the Temple coatroom. All donations will go to Foodshare.

We are also collecting old T-shirts. Our religious school students will be turning these old T-shirts into reusable bags.

 FlyerTemple Sinai’s spring rummage sale is coming, and it’s open to the public. There will be goods of all kinds, and Monday is “bag day”.

Sale hours: Sunday, April 3, 12:00–3:00 p.m., and Monday, April 4, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m

If you are in grades 5–12, stay tuned for more information about the Purim Shul-in on March 19.

 Within the last few weeks, you should have received your invitation to our 60th Anniversary Gala party—as well as an invitation to offer your congratulatory message in our Ad Journal.

Our 60^th anniversary weekend is more than just a party:

• On Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. we’ll be joined in our celebration by Senator Richard Blumenthal. We will also honor our founding members, long time members, past Presidents and past Sisterhood presidents.
• On Saturday, April 30, 7:00–11:00 p.m., we’ll have an evening of dinner and dancing. Please make your paid reservation by April 16.
• On Sunday, May 1, we’ll have a special Mitzvah Day children’s service at 9:00 a.m. The children will be making special food bags in support of our cause to help those who suffer from hunger.

This year (2015), the first candle is lit the evening of December 6.

The Chanukah lights should be kindled as soon as possible after nightfall. On Fridays, the lights are kindled before the beginning of Shabbat (before the Shabbat candles are lit). The lighting procedure is as follows:

1. The correct number of candles are placed in the menorah, beginning at your right.
2. Each subsequent night you add one candle, starting at the right and moving left.
3. After the candles are set, you light the shamash, the helper candle, which usually has a distinct place on the menorah apart from the other candles.
4. Use the shamash to light the rest from left to right.
