Social Action Committee Newsletter (April 2013)

Thanks to our members who have so generously donated their time as food, coats and books to those in need this year. We appreciate all your donations. If you wish to donate books, please contact me and we can direct you to donation centers in the Greater Hartford area.

April Mitzvah of the Month will be raising donations/pledges for the FoodShare Walk Against Hunger. The annual walk will be on Sunday, May 5. Register now and begin collecting pledges trom your family and friends. Register by going to www.foodshare.org and join Temple Sinai’s team. There is no charge to sign up; you are encouraged to collect sponsors. Our goal is to raise $3,000 to help our hungry neighbors. On May 5, we will have lunch at the Temple and then head to the walk in Hartford.

May 5 is also Mitzvah Day. We will be showcasing acts of mitzvot from our Temple during the morning. We will also be partaking in mitzvah projects around the Temple. lf you have been volunteering or working with a non-profit organization that you wish to showcase to others in our Temple, please contact me to be incorporated into the event.

FoodShare has asked Temple Sinai to help with a “Retail Pickup” volunteer program. This entails volunteers going one time per month to pick up food donations from local grocery stores and bringing the food to shelters. All volunteers must be able to pick up and drop off food during the day (preferably before noon). Volunteers will work as a team with other members of our congregation. There will be a training and information session Tuesday, April 16 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m at the Temple. A pizza supper will be provided. Please RSVP to tsinai@snet.net new-message24 or call 860/561-1055 if you would like to come to the meeting and volunteer for this meaningful project. The Mercy Shelter is looking for Temple Sinai volunteers for preparation and serving of a dinner on the following Sundays: April 21, June 16, July 7, and August 11. If you would like to volunteer (school age children are welcome) please email the Temple at tsinai@snet.net new-message24. Bethany Astrachan is chair for this project. Thank you for your continuous efforts in your acts of mitzvot. Please contact me if you have any questions or ideas for Social Action.
