Adult Education Newsletter (October – November 2013)

The Adult Education committee hopes all Temple Sinai members had a wonderful summer. While the committee has also enjoyed some time off, we have been hard at work planning and organizing some great programs.

Friday, October 25, after the Shabbat service

Cantor Gordon will be leading a discussion on the book “Unorthodox”. All are welcome to stay after the service for refreshments and the discussion. The book “Unorthodox” is reserved in local libraries for Temple Sinai members. Please mention the Temple when you go to borrow the book. The following sunmary has been provided by the website goodreads.com:

“As a member of the strictly religious Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism, Deborah Feldman grew up under a code of relentlessly enforced customs governing everything from what she could wear and to whom she could speak to what she was allowed to read. It was stolen moments spent with the empowered literary characters of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott that helped her to imagine an alternative way of life.

“Trapped as a teenager in a sexually and emotionally dysfunctional marriage to a man she barely knew, the tension between Deborah’s desires and her responsibilities as a good Satmar girl grew more explosive.”

Saturday, November 9, at 6:00 p.m.

Temple Sinai will be showing the movie “A Bottle in the Gaza Sea.” There will be a $12.00 charge for the event. Pizza from Yanni’s will be served along with salad, drinks, and desserts. The following summary has been provided by Rottentomatoes.com:

“17 year-old Tal has emigrated from France to Jerusalem with her family. She writes a letter expressing her refusal to accept that only hatred can reign between Israelis and Palestinians. She slips the letter into a bottle, and her brother throws it into the sea near Gaza, where he is carrying out his military service. A few weeks later, Tal receives an e-mail response from a mysterious “Gazaman”, a young Palestinian named Nam. Thus begins a turbulent but tender long-distance friendship between two young people that are separated by a history they are trying both to understand and change. This engrossing and hopeful drama starring Hiam Abbas is based on the award-winning novel by Valrie Zenatti.”

Sunday, November 17, 6:30 p.m.

Temple Sinai members are invited to the Berlin Mosque, 1781 Wilbur Cross Hwy., Berlin, for an interfaith event with our Muslim friends. The topic of the event will be “Death and Dying”. Rabbi Bennett and Mort Weinstein along with some of the Mosque members will be speaking on the topic and the connections between the two faiths. We look forward to seeing you all there. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
